The CF DAC-040 not only uses 12AU7's but is also tubed rectified, so yes it is tube based. It gives you the natural timbres, 3D imaging, and tonality that tubes have to offer, but is very detailed, transparent, and has excellent extension on the top and bottom unlike other tube based DACS that I have auditioned in the last 3 to 5 years.

I had a fusion dac pre with tj full music 12ax7. I used it as a preamp for a year and really enjoyed it. Replaced a exemplar audio dac and tube preamp and didn't feel I was missing much. I found the jolida to be a bit on the warm side, not necessarily a bad thing.

The Exemplar Mod is a complete multichannel mod, with a 2 channel tube stage. I cannot really comment on the 5 channel difference, cause I never used the 2900 with multi-channel. I can say the 3910 is GREAT with multi-channel, and the video blows the 2900 away.
