The HTPC is set to boot straight into XBMC. When it does the HDA ATI, HDMI is not in the list of audio output devices. As a result it defaults to PulseAudio and I get no sound. If I exit XBMC (return to the Mint desktop) then start XBMC manually HDA …

You may also try: defaults.pcm.device 3 Also if this gives you menu sound but no movie sound uncheck DTS and AC3 passthrough in XBMC and see if you get sound then.

The Raspberry Pi (Xbian and XBMC again) is now connected to the AV Receiver through the "HDMI In" input, and the AV Receiver "HDMI Out" goes to a 720p projector. Although the video works, there's no audio anywhere. I've tried to apply previous solutions, such as this one in which the config.txt should have the following lines

no sound on XBMC - AVForums

Don't know of this is an issue in the pc version of xbmc, but on my raspberry pi version there is a known issue with hdmi sound and the audio engine option. If the audio engine option is selected it, for some reason, makes the hdmi option disappear and you can only select analog and optical. Which for me gave me no sound at all.
