woo audio - Positive Feedback

Then I heard that Jack Woo had come out with the WDS-1, a reference quality 24/192 DAC with USB and S/PDIF inputs as well as optical (TOSLINK) and AES/EBU; and the whole thing only cost $1199. Was it too good to be true? I had to find out for myself. So I wrote to Jack and asked if I could review one for Positive Feedback Online. He said, in characteristically polite fashion, that …

The volume control is nice, very nice. The Woo supports more bit rates. I can't really hear the difference between the two filters. Balanced output works well, and you can run both single-ended and balanced at the same time. Not …

I've just received a WDS-1 to go along with my WA22. First impressions are pretty much what's been said earlier in this thread, exceptionally well built and beautiful object. I bought this mostly for computer use, but I'm also currently running out of the Toslink on my Sony XA5400ES CD/SACD, balanced and through a Goldpoint XLR switcher, so the WA22 can receive …

Firing up the WDS-1 results in the satisfying click of the relays and the very pale illumination of the beautiful VFD display. Compared to the gleaming lights of my amp, power conditioner, EQ/Processor, and even the OLED display of the transport, the WDS-1 screen seems barely visible. Dim in an elegant and understated sort of way. I like it!

I don't have a lot of experience with DACs, but I would say WDS-1 is definitely better than the Bifrost. Not just in terms of features, but also in terms of sound. I think the treble come in a lot clearer but I don't feel anything is missing from the bottom or middle. It might lean on the bright side, but I feel it is still balanced over all.
