menu -> virtual machine -> settings -> Sound Card -> click button "Remove Sound Card" -> confirm removal. Then button top right "Add Device" -> Select "Sound Card" -> click "Add..." This will refresh the Sound card configuration and does tend to resolve the "no audio device" issue. Good luck!--Wil

Ever since I changed to using Windows 10 in my VMware Fusion virtual machine, I've struggled with a fair bit of latency and audio problems when using the standard HDAudio device. I had the same/similar issue with my XP SP3 VM under VMware Player 15.5.2 build-15785246 (and older versions) running under win10 (1903 currently, also older versions) host. The login sound was clear but shortly after audio became distorted, and bizarrely opening WMP would fix the issue just as you describe.
