I found in /var/log/daemon.log that snd.ko was missing. I searched with apt-file and saw that it belonged to linux-image-2.6.32-3-amd64, so I reinstalled that package and rebooted. lsmod now reports and sound modules as loaded, even snd-hda-intel! So half of my problem was resolved. What remains is the sound server issue.
