With the new 80gb PS3, I'm wanting to go from HDMI to DVI to plug it up to my monitor. My question is, how will I get audio from the PS3 since DVI can't handle audio? I'm not looking to spend a lot of money on this solution, just something that will get the job done and can maybe handle 7.1.

HDMI to DVI - no audio for PS3 | AVForums

I have connected both the red and white audio wires from the PS3 to my Phillips tv, however the sound only is heard on the AV video function, but the HD video (which is connected via the HDMI-DVI cable) is only displayed on the HD video function on the TV. So i was hoping someone would be able to answer the question of the original poster for me.

DVI is only video. If you convert HDMI into a DVI (since DVI has no sound to begin with), you cannot magically get sound. You have four options: 1) Stop being cheap, get a new monitor with an HDMI output (or a TV that has an HDMI output). 2) Deal without having sound. 3) …

I do not own a PS3, but I'm positive that a DVI cable can only pass through video signals only. So theoretically if you use a HDMI to DVI cable you will not get sound only visuals because DVI is for visuals not sound! HDMI cable should be avoided for audio unless you have the proper equipment such as a compatible AV receiver.

Use an HDMI (to HDMI) cable. As others have said, your DVI adapter is removing audio. You'll need to use Optical or RCA at the same time if you need to use DVI. Try using the standard AV cables with an ampilifier to hear audio. I have used HDMI to DVI with using the other connection successfully in the past 6 months.
