I have a NVidia GeForce 8500 GT video card with an HDMI port through which video is playing smoothly but I can't get audio out over the HDMI cable. I've done a few hours of reading and have updated the Nvidia drivers as well as ALSA only to cause XBMC to stop loading, so I reinstalled to start from scratch.

It has HDMI out through the 8500GT card, and that card is connected to the SPDIF node on the motherboard for HDMI audio passthrough. I've downloaded the latest nvidia drivers, I've tried the older drivers from their website, and Windows will not recognize any other audio sources other than the front and rear analog audio.
