Just to add a solution- I have a dual monitor set-up on Win 8.1 I have realtek audio on motherboard, but I have the sound coming through HDMI on monitor. I have this strange little quirk that when I boot into windows without the second monitor turned on, Win 8.1 seems to remove HDMI as a audio option. Not in control panel- sound or Device manager.

Open Device Manger, Right click on the IDT with the triangle and choose uninstall. Once it has uninstalled, right click and choose scan for new hardware. They are the Inspiron 5520, 5521, 5537. Dell recommends against using 8.1 on the other 15R models (Inspiron N5110 & M5110). There should be at least 2 audio drivers available, one from Dell and a generic driver included with Windows. I would try installing or re-installing the audio driver from Dell. HDMI audio is an aspect of the graphics driver.

This is an issue with the default sound settings in Windows 8.1. To fix it, right click the Sound icon in the bottom right corner, and choose Playback Devices. Click your HDMI sound device, and go to Properties. Go to enhancements tab and check the disable all enhancements, and click OK. You should be getting sound over your HDMI port again.
