If Pro Tools is started with a drive not connected, it simply will not recognize it unless Pro Tools is restarted. The simple fix (which you didn't want to hear) is to attach the keyboard before opening Pro Tools.

No drivers are necessary with that controller. Windows automatically sees the usb port of the keystation. Even before you open Sonar. You have to go to Sonar X1 preferences look for MIDI click on that and you should see the controller name on the list of midi drivers. Check the boxes for in and out to enable.
