They can be viewed just fine there (audio and video) but iMovie won't allow them to be imported because they are in the .avi format. That's what streamclip fixes. Once the files have been converted, they can be moved into iMovie but the audio is missing. You're talking to a rank beginner here so I'm probably missing something obvious.

The project is finished in iMovie, ready for publishing in HD, when I preview it there, no issues with the sound.
