The 8000A was a truly good sounding amplifier by the early 1990s, with a wide, expansive, and pleasurable sound – albeit not quite as visceral and ‘edge of the seat’ as competitors from Naim, for example. Regardless, it made a lot of friends and is perhaps one of the best-selling amplifiers of the 1980s and 1990s.

Having owned the Audiolab 8000A series III for a number of years I can give, I hope, a reasonably accurate account of it. I bought it at the time for its accuracy - being partnered with a mildly warm Philips CD850 and mildly forward Tannoy 613's. In reality, it is mildly coloured. Mid range is slightly forward and hi treble is rolled back.

First proper hifi amp I bought was the Audiolab 8000a integrated amp in '85. I found that the sound and build quality was exceptional at the time and still works well now - the phono stage I thought (and still do) was very good. Much preferred the sound to my friend at the time's Naim Nait. Here's a picture of mine (currently in the garage) and ...

The serial numbers do denote slight revision, the original grey 8000A had no alphabets in the serial number, followed by A, B, D, E and finally F just before Tag McLaren took over. I don't know if they ever had a C serial number. Now that Audiolab's as a brand is being revived by IAG, maybe they'll continue on with the serial numbering system?
