Having used a 4850 for sound over HDMI, it depends a little on whether you're using XP or Vista. XP will require you to download a separate driver for HDMI audio on the ATI website, it's not part of the XP CCC download. Vista's driver includes this driver.

I'm struggling to install a HD4850 card drivers under XP. Catalyst install manager does not detect my card no matter what I do. I tried the latest ATI Realtek HDMI 1.97 drivers, but that just made the HDMI audio device not work. I noticed when i connected the PS3 via HDMI. the receiver acknowledges the HDMI, (displays on the receiver screen), but the HD4850 via HDMI, the receiver doesn't acknowledge any signal.... but i still get a picture on the TV.

Ati hd4850 over hdmi - audio not working. If not, then i think i read somewhere the the 4870 has an inbuilt audio controller this could mean that there is basically a sound card on the graphics card it self and all you need to do is install the hdmi drivers and enable the audio over hdmi. Update your graphics card drivers today.

I've been trying to get HDMI audio working on my Denon 1909 AVR for the past 6 hours and it's just not happening and pretty much sums up the luck I've been having with PCs this week. The Radeon has a HDMI port on it so there is no need for a DVI-HDMI adapter. My setup is as follows: Radeon 4550 HDMI -> Denon 1909 (HDMI Port 1) -> Samsung LE40M87BD.
