Cambridge Audio Azur 651C: Preamp. Trying the Cambridge as a preamp gives us mixed results. We like the clarity and resolution on offer, but can do without the loss of substance and hint of electronic edge using it in this configuration produces. Make no mistake; this Cambridge is an immensely capable performer.

Cambridge Audio Azur 851C CD Player/DAC. Cambridge Audio’s Azur 840C CD player made quite a splash back in 2007. In my review of that device (Issue 174, September, 2007) I was shocked not only by the advanced technologies and build-quality of this $1499 player, but more importantly by how good it sounded. The 840C, I concluded, was one of the ...

The CD player is on the way to becoming a relic. Just as several rather nice sounding players are hitting the market, online music is exploding at a rate that will leave discs in its digital dust.

The other Steve below who posted 3 stars in his April 29, 2012 review probably works for a store selling competitor's gear, but no Cambridge. Well, I also happen to own the Teac PD-H600 (for my office system) and frankly, as good as the TEAC is, it is NOWHERE of the same caliber as the 840C - not comparable by any stretch of the imagination.

The new 550C offers mind-bending performance from what at first appear to be a relatively modest design. Indeed simplicity and purity is the name of the game with the Cambridge Audio’s latest CD players which deliver excellent dynamics, clarity and superb timing from music of all genres. The unit feels well assembled and looks very well finished, as is commensurate with it's significantly higher price, and at 10Kg, the chassis feels substantially built. The Cambridge Audio Azur remote is a traditionally shaped affair, but the aluminium face plate gives it a more classy, upmarket feel. Connectivity.

Playback at 24/192 works natively with Macs, but Windows-based computers require a driver, which Cambridge Audio supplies. (The 851C’s default setting is USB Audio 1.0, which allows for up to 24/96 playback from Mac- or Windows-based computers without the need for the special driver.) Navigating the menu system to make such changes was a snap.
