In the sound settings there should be four "pockets": Playback, recording, sounds and communications. Open recordings and right-click on stereo mix, then click enable. That's pretty much it. Start the game and it should be good. Later Bioshock games have no sound issues and require no such manipulations.

My girlfriend had the exact same problem with her Realtek audio and Win 7 x64 and enabling stereo mix fixed it for her. If that doesn't work, try running Bioshock under compatibility mode. This may also work if you don't have Realtek audio: Find the Bioshock.exe (:C\Program Files(x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Bioshock\Builds\Release\Bioshock.exe)

I have audio problems too. Bioshock seems to want to output in 5.1 mode regardless of my audio settings. I'm using 2.1 speakers but they cut out when the audio source is either behind me or directly in front of me (center channel). Doesn't matter what I set it to.

The sound works but the stuttering is really killing me. I can't here the Radio guy sometimes and I can't turn the volume up because when it stutters the sound is LOAD.
