It's all a matter of taste. I tend to prefer Kiwami resistors in tubed applications, as Vishays can sound a little too analytical. However, from what I've heard, the Vishay/Dales are the finest sounding resistors for the Goldpoint stepped attenuators. Very, very clean sounding response...exactly what you want in a pre. Cheers!

Wire-wound resistors are the least noisy followed by metal-film, metal-oxide, and carbon-film. The noisiest— carbon comp. So, if you are concerned with noise, use metal-film resistors, especially in the input stage.

In the old days, the only resistors available were carbon-type. By now, many of these in the power section are way out-of-spec, and need to be replaced. Also, carbon resistors are generally very noisy, so although the original carbon resistors in the audio path may still be within spec, upgrading will achieve significant audible improvement.

The resistors I've tried, in order of preference: Mundorf MOX just seem to sound right without any edge or emphasis on highs. Very open and detailed, with nice tone and projection of details. Caddock MP930 thick film with heatsink sound very clear, but produce a mechanical sharpness to highs.

With resistors many think carbon comps are required for true mojo, especially as plate loads. Others discount the mojo factor completely and go with metal film as the most stable and quiet in operation. While others split the difference and use carbon film for some of the mojo with better stability and quieter operation.
