Speaker Wire - Audiokarma

I used speaker wire to power my Cibie driving lights on my Opel GT back in the late 70's. The insulation melted and the wire touched the body. I blew the fuse on the lights. But they were fine for my hi-fi. It's got to get pretty warm to melt the insulation enough to cause a short. A heater vent should not be an issue at all.

Beware of too large of speaker wire. Lots of vintage gear and speakers weren't designed to accept thick wire. As a general rule, I don't use anything smaller than 16ga. And that would be fine. Larger is fine too, as long as it fits, but it's not necessary. Another thing to be aware of is CCA (copper clad aluminum).

Just avoid the CCA (copper clad aluminum) speaker wire and go with pure copper, 14 gauge is fine, so is 12 or 10 (make sure 10 will fit binding posts on both sides first). It will be inexpensive if you go for non -exotic OFC (oxygen free copper). peterp1, Tuesday at 3:12 AM #11 LRVGTR, Natertots and Roadrash like this. Grenadeslio Lunatic Member

The resistance of a wire is proportional to both its gauge and its length. The short internal runs of relatively thin wire inside an amp have very low resistance because they're short. In general, if you're concerned about resistive losses in a …

The towers would be well served with a pair of 10 to 15 ft speaker wire, and the center shouldn't need much more than 5 ft Preferably I'd like all 3 speakers to have the same wires I can use raw ends, spades, or banana plugs no real preference other than maybe whatever is easiest to connect! Thanks a million!

James 2010-10-06 15:05. Via an e-mail exchange with Speakerlab, I've learned that the crossover for the Speakerlab 7WA generally had green wires for the 12" driver and blue wires for the 10" driver. They had no idea why that particular crossover set would have white wires unless maybe it was a supply problem. In any case, Speakerlab recommended ...

The rule of thumb is that using pure cooper wire, 16 gauge wire with 8ohms (speakers) should not exceed 48 feet. Many home speakers use 6 ohms. At 6 ohms, the max length is 36'. CCA wire is about one size worse for resistance than copper wire, so a 16 AWG CCA wire should not exceed 32' at 8ohms and 24' at 6 ohms.

All the Klipsch speakers I've heard sounded too bright to my ears. My metal domed B&W speakers are the brightest I want a speaker, any more and I find them fatiguing. Many I hear who use Klipsch speakers love bright speakers, but to me I would never use any of them.
