The Audio Mirror preamp uses a pair of 6N1P tubes for amplification (a third tube is used for the power supply rectifier). The 6N1P is a higher filament current version of the ECC88/6DJ8. It's not clear to me yet if a 6DJ8 can be substituted. If not, then tubes are going to be limited to Sovtek, which seems to be the only current supplier.

The TAD 150 uses two 12AU7s, 12AX7s, or 12AT7s and has solid state rectification as where the T-61 uses two 6DJ8s (6922s) and has a tube for rectification. I will not say one is better than the other because they are both going to sound different but in a positive way & will come down to personal preferences.

I have read that tube preamps can add some "warmth" and perhaps "soften" the audio signal input to the power amp. This has been recommended for systems which seem a bit "bright" in the reproduction of the higher range. I have Thiel CS 2's driven by a Hafler 9180 power amp and a Rotel 971 preamp.

What power amp are you using? I am guessing that the Audio Mirror PP1 is a tube preamp, correct? If so, it is overdriving the amp by not allowing you to use more of the volume control's range. Try replacing the input pair of 12AX7's with a pair of 12AU7's for lower gain. This should allow you to use more of the control's range, up near 12 o'clock.
