The overall volume level of the file is then raised such that the peak signal is just below digital full signal. If done to several tracks the peak levels will sound the same, but the average ...

Normalization is "destructive" - that is, it changes the audio data in order to achieve the desired peak level. But a better way to go is what sathvyre mentions - MP3Gain is an example of an app (or a function within a larger app) that tells the playback software to adjust the volume song-by-song to maintain a similar peak (or average ...

How to normalize audio? Why do it? Everything you need to know

    https://higherhz.com/audio-normalization/
Higher Hz October 13, 2021. To normalize audio is to change its overall volume by a fixed amount to reach a target level. It is different from compression that changes volume over time in varying amounts. It does not affect dynamics like compression, and ideally does not change the sound in any way other than purely changing its volume.

    https://blog.landr.com/audio-normalization/
Audio normalization is a process that increases the level of a recording by a constant amount so that it reaches a target—or norm. Thought I'd try this out. I used nero express to burn an audio track that I previously recorded to my C drive at a very low record level. Then I burnt it to a cd-rw using nero express, with "normailize" ticked. Sure enough, it normalized the level. Nero appears to select RMS & 20 as the default setting.

Is Nero's normalize function any good for final audio CD?

Usually, I use Nero 7, and then use the 'Normalize' function, which I believe levels all the audio to a similar volume. It works quite alright for me, although I still get some tracks sound quiter than others. When mastering, I try to make my tracks as loud using Oxford Inflator, without going into digital distortion.

From the Nero Express manual, "Normalize Audio Files": Enables a filter that brings the volume of the audio files to be burned into line with one another. This is recommended particularly if the files originate from different sources. Given you've got a mix of files, I'd suggest normalizing would be good – otherwise you may get a CD with some ...

FYI, most of the music I use Nero to burn is from the 60's, 70's & 80's- on this stuff (mostly recorded several dB under max) the default RMS norm works very well. I will try using Foobar2000 to norm & Nero to burn. I haven't been able to make heads or tails out of FB yet- it mystifies me. But hopefully i'll figure out how to use it. Rob
