13.10 - Xfce4 sound can't be un-muted - Ask Ubuntu

    https://askubuntu.com/questions/406242/xfce4-sound-cant-be-un-muted
When I mute sound on Xfce (Or login to Xfce with the sound muted from the last shutdown), un-muting the sound doesn't actually un-mute all the sound outputs. It only un-mutes the master level, but not the speaker nor the headphone levels. In the attached picture, when I mute\un-mute the sound, only the master level is responding.

Muting sound in Wheezy XFCE --- cannot un-mute - Debian ...

    https://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=115347
After successfully muting the sound with the XFCE Mixer panel applet, if I try to unmute the sound, it does not come back; the panel, however, indicates that the sound has been un-muted. The same behavior results from the built-in keyboard muting (fn-F1 successfully mutes, pressing fn-F1 again indicates that the sound should be back, but it is not).

Volume Stuck on Mute (XFCE Desktop) - Manjaro

    https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php/Volume_Stuck_on_Mute_(XFCE_Desktop)
The inability to toggle the volume mute particulary affects users of the XFCE desktop environment. This is due to an incompatability between xfce4-volumed - the volume daemon used by this desktop environment- and PulseAudio, which is responsible for recording and playback. The result is that once muted, the volume cannot be restored by un-checking the mute button; …

in the terminal and then press 'M' to toggle the mute state. Apparently, the Audio Mixer was muting PulseAudio AND Alsa, but unmuting ONLY Alsa. If you run the following command, it will list all the properties under xfce4-mixer: xfconf-query -lc xfce4-mixer. In my case, what I saw is only one mixer under /sound-cards/ entry.

Ubuntu 13.10 and xfce4: No sound at all - Ask Ubuntu

    https://askubuntu.com/questions/397819/ubuntu-13-10-and-xfce4-no-sound-at-all
Answer 2: Log out of Xfce, log in using Unity, un-mute your voice (This is the trick. I found my sound muted on Unity). Logout and login again using Xfce. What still bothers me, is that when I muted the sound on Xfce, the problem occurred again. No sound at all even if I un-mute it while I'm still on Xfce !

XFCE - Audio Mixer fails to run / Applications & Desktop ...

    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=248673
After upgrading all apps and rebooting, when starting XFCE it reports "Plugin Audio Mixer unexpectedly left the panel, do you want to restart it?" It then offers to Execute again, which fails, or Remove. So no volume control. Sound was muted by default but alsamixer in a terminal works fine and sound can be restored.

Good volume indicator for xfce panel : xfce

The applet does not have a mute button. Or media controls. xfce4-mixer and xfce4-volumed don't properly support pulseaudio and are rather buggy when used with pulseaudio. I also just dislike xfce4-mixer's panel applet, its not as user friendly as indicator-sound, and pavucontrol is also way better than xfce4-mixer.
