The whole point of the audio dongle that comes with the elite (the one with only stereo RCA output and the optical port, no video outputs) is to allow you to do what you want. Its designed to fit at the same time as the HDMI. Its the component and vga leads that won't fit in at the same time as the HDMI, hence why you have to snap the cover off.
