On a 360 S console, you can use the optical port for audio out. On the original 360 console a thin AV port audio breakout is required for optical. This breakout also provides left/right analog audio out and works with the 360 S console. The thin AV adapter comes with the older HDMI AV kit. Not sure if it's still bundled with the new kit.
