I'm new to XBMC, and love it. I have an new Acer laptop running Windows 8.1 connected directly to a Toshiba HDTV via HDMI. When playing a movie or music thru XBMC, I get no audio thru the HDMI connection. Just through the laptop speakers. Audio output is fine thru the TV speakers with all other apps.

This provides the audio and video from XBMC. My LG TV obviously displays the video, and passes the audio through an optical audio cable to my 5.1 receiver. To make matters worse the Laptops internal monitor is lower resolution than 1080p, and causes XBMC to resize, often causing issues. The sound also goes through the HDMI, and sometimes does not properly switch over from internal to HDMI.
