I'm new to XBMC, and love it. I have an new Acer laptop running Windows 8.1 connected directly to a Toshiba HDTV via HDMI. When playing a movie or music thru XBMC, I get no audio thru the HDMI connection. Just through the laptop speakers. Audio output is fine thru the TV speakers with all other apps.

Xbmc user herw. I was on 7 and upgraded to 8 recently and I love it. The biggie is having a dedicated Netflix app in the metro interface. There are also a number of other metro apps that work very well with a TV. If you do run win 8, I recommend tweaking the live tile settings so that they're enlarged for the TV. Makes a huge difference.
