I use audio over HDMI directly to my TV. I have a full Ubuntu 10.10 desktop install. I can hear the audio from both my desktop and from XBMC but the volume level is VERY low. I have everything in alsamixer set to 100%, I have XBMC set to 0 db and I can barely hear anything unless I set my TV volume to an extremely high level.

I had similar problems (slightly different card though) with Zotac G210 Synergy Edition 1GB DDR3 DVI HDMI VGA PCI-E Graphics Card, but on Ubuntu 11.10 (default Unity install) it works 'almost' out of the box. I finally got the Nvidia HDMI audio fully working with the help of very kind and patient nvidia engineer who helped me solve the issue over the course of 2 days. This is with Arch-2.6.32, alsa-driver-1.0.22.1, nvidia 190.53. My card is a GT210 but I'm 99% sure this works with any GT2xx card.
