I have XBMC installed on Linux Mint 13. I was successfully using optical audio for many months until a black out, after which audio no longer worked. I have tried other devices using the optical audio of my AV receiver with no luck. For that reason I have abandoned optical audio and am trying to use HDMI audio from my HTPC to the TV.

I'm trying to setup my HT amp via hdmi from my linux computer but I get only sound from xbmc via the hdmi card and not other programs (KDE system, vlc ...) I've tried the test option of the KDE audio selection tool and speaker-test on the device that I understand is used by xbmc to no avail (see below).

I didn't require those steps but then again I always had alsamixer showing 4 (defunct) spdif outputs for my hdmi audio device. quick update, someone over at the xbmc linux forum created a patch that should help people with cards not showing up at all. thread is here.
