Great news everyone! It's really easy to enable passthrough. In fact, I just did exactly that on my Series X running in dev mode. Huge thanks to @618116 for providing the hints and essentially figuring this out! All I had to do is to remove the "is desktop check" between lines 63-66 in WinSystemWin10.cpp, which prevented the WASAPI audio sink to load on Xbox.

If I remember correctly, Kodi uses DirectSound to realize passthrough on Windows PCs. DirectSound, however, is not available on Xbox. The apps which currently support passthrough presumably all use high-level media APIs that are specific to UWP. In that case, the passthrough is indeed handled automatically by the Xbox operating system.
