    Anyway, my setup is an ION with Win 7 x86 -- HDMI --> Sony STR-DN1000 receiver -- HDMI --> Sharp Aquos HDTV. The receiver has always been set to AMP mode, and when I change it to TV+AMP just to test, I see my speaker config drops to 2 channel stereo only, which makes sense. But back on AMP only, I do see 5.1 and 7.1 as options.

    Actually I believe this is a Windows 7 problem. My nVidia card cooked on me so I'm back to my integrated Radeonn HD 3300 via HDMI, and it is the same way, 2 channel only walgreenslistens. However, prior to installing that nVidia card I was using Vista on this machine, and I had 7.1 and even dolby digital working to my Sony AV receiver.

    When I initially set it all up the only option listed in sound settings in Windows 7 was for stereo. After searching the web I found that people were solving the problem by reinstalling the Realtek HD Audio drivers for the motherboard's onboard sound. I did that and sure enough I got my surround sound options!
