dB SPL and dB IL are giving people a harder time. dB SPL = the physical measure of sound pressure. 0 dB is not the absence of sound. It's simply a reference to the sound that is equal in pressure to 0.002 dynes/cm 2. To calculate a value of a sound in SPL, you take the pressure and convert it to dynes/cm 2 and then divide by the reference. Take the log of that ratio times 20.
