The WDTV does have a DAC on the analog output, and in that regard, it does have limitations (but I don’t recall of the ones you’re referencing are correct or not.) It outputs DIGITAL audio in the same format as the source, up to and including DD 5.1 and DTS.

FLAC files are 2ch 16bit 44.1kHz audio (D/A converter Beresford Caiman is only able to deal with 2ch PCM files). In WD TV Live settings I have for audio output seting as Digital. Hovewer, when I try to play an MKV movie with multi channel audio, all I get out from the D/A converter is cracking sound (and I think that is the way it should be).

Also, Note that the WDTV is NOT the only device with this limitation. This limitation is apparent in many other Competitor’s devices as well as operating systems such as Windows 7 where only 1 Default Device can be selected to output Audio. For those who misunderstand this concept.

My WDTV Live is connected to my Sony WEGA 36" standard definition TV via composite output. I also connected an optical cable from the player to my receiver, and I set the player’s audio output to “digital” on the audio setup screen. The receiver does recognize digital input from a DVD player, computer soundcard, and DVR.

If no audio then one of the 3 are wrong. Also connect the PS3 back to the AV and play a 5.1 game, with this test also you will narrow down the possible failures: data (rip) or a faulty optical output on the TV live. Good luck again. shchoy October 15, 2015, 3:12am #10.
