Sometimes it says that there are no audio files on the MDI device. Sometimes the MDI source button greys out and becomes unavailable. We've also tried using a 32GB SD card (which can hold about half the collection). The SD card is even flakier. Sometimes it can read it, and sometimes it says "SD Card Error".

Just to help clarify, you need a VW-specific MDI to ipod/iphone adapter cable. At the Apple end of the MDI cable, there's one with the older 30-pin connector, and the newer Lightning type. Interestingly, my '15 Touareg came with the old 30-pin cable. VW sent me a "free" Lightning cable, didn't have to ask for it, it just showed up in the mail ...
