I want to mention that audio works fine for me on VMware 12 Pro (12.1.1 build-3770994). All it takes is installing VMware Tools on your VM (and making sure audio is selected). I would use VMware, but sadly, the mouse is a lot laggier than it is in VirtualBox on my laptop, plus I like that my mouse doesn't get captured in VirtualBox like it does ...

Hello All, this XP guest machine sound problem in VMWare workstation has been giving me grief and agony for the last few days (Nothing is perfect, I get it). Even the VMware audio tray fix and the timer did not work out. So, I rolled back to VMWare 15.5.2 and then used the VMware audio tray fix and hey presto! No more crackling sounds in XP.

Hi. i have the same issue, normal sound is crackling a bit, tried all the normal workarounds on the web, changing quality and so on. worst quality is usb passthru usb headset, unfortunately i need both, i tried already thru all other virtualization but as i need USB headset and TPM i'm stuck with vmware player and now i have sound issues.

The audio crackling problem seems to be an artifact of windows 10 using smaller audio buffers than windows 7 - and VB not keeping up. In short, guest windows cannot process the audio IRQ fast enough under virtualbox and an audio buffer underrun occurs. Windows 10 reduced the audio latency (and thus the buffer size) from 10ms -> 1ms.
