The S/PDIF passthrough works fine when a third party software setting enables it (tried: VLC, Media Player Black edition), but for games or other applications, which are capable of outputting 5.1 channel AC3 format (Dolby Digital) through a default device, but do not have this setting, I did not find an option to enable the passthrough in Windows.
