    I’m running Debian and XFCE4, but I had the same problem and solved it with. sudo aptitude purge vlc-plugin-pulse. In other words, my phonon has the vlc plugin, but the the pulse audio vlc plugin was installed. Once I remove it, phonon started using Alsa, as I desired. Hope this helps.
