I have a new low-end Compaq Notebook with Vista Home. All audio was too low but I found updated driver and now regular internet videos and audio CDs are OK but DVDs are still too soft. They play with a Compaq DVD player. Windows Media Centre 11 does not play DVDs. Compaq suggested downloading another DVD player which I did - but it's no better.

The guy at CPL said that for the optical drive I no longer needed a 4 pin audio cable for the DVD drive in order for sound to work in Vista. Does this sound correct? To me it doesn't. Even the drives intallation instructions make reference to the audio cable to be attached to the m/b or soundcard.
