For future reference, VirtualDub still doesn't support AC3 itself, but there's a link to the Dolby Digital plugin on the VideoHelp VitrualDub page. When you add the audio from another file, selecting Dolby Digital from the drop down box should let you open an extracted AC3 file directly, and to save it using direct stream copy.

Lack of 24 bit audio support has made VirtualDub2 completely useless for me. I take audio recorded from and Allan and Heath QU-16 Mixer - which records as 24-bit 48kHz mono PCM WAV files. These get synced up to recorded video. Without 24 bit support I cant use VirtualDub2 for the projects for my church.
