Try installing the AC3 ACM Decompressor. That should help. This is the one!. Just right-click on the inf file and select install (I use Windows 7). I also used the AC3.zip previously mentioned. Place the AC3.vdplugin in the plugin folder under VirtualDub. Restart VirtualDub and it works Bam! That was it.

You should select Audio, Full processing, then file, save .wav in VirtualDub. Transcode the .wav to AC3 in ffmpeggui. If your source file is 23.976, then select NTSC DVD FILM in the wizard. This will encode at 23.976 with 3:2 pulldown for you. If you're not using the wizard, select the same things manually on the Settings screen (s).

If I try to play or demux the file in VDmod I get the message "no audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format". I've checked the same file in Gspot which reports a successful render and lists the various codecs, including audio. I can play the file with Ulead DVD Player and there is definitely audio present in the file.
