Try installing the AC3 ACM Decompressor. That should help. This is the one!. Just right-click on the inf file and select install (I use Windows 7). I also used the AC3.zip previously mentioned. Place the AC3.vdplugin in the plugin folder under VirtualDub. Restart VirtualDub and it works Bam! That was it.

MP42 Decompressor for VirtualDub - Video Codecs ...

If you’re using the old MS MPEG-4 codecs, use them with the 32-bit version of VirtualDub (yes, 32-bit VirtualDub works fine with 64-bit Windows). If you’re using 64-bit VirtualDub, you need 64-bit VfW decoders. ATM the only one for MP42 I know of is bundled in the 64-bit version of ffdshow-tryouts. It’s still experimental.

Select the decoder tab, and click on Codecs on the upper left. Click on “Other MPEG4” on the right, and in the middle column make sure it’s NOT disabled (libavcodec is my recommended choice, but I guess xvid should work fine too). Then click apply and your FMP4 video should be openable in VirtualDub.

VirtualDub is mainly geared toward processing AVI files, although it can read (not write) MPEG-1 and also handle sets of BMP images.
