    https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?t=43641
With IO-APIC enabled the sound was choppy, if disabled everything works. And if it was enabled the number of the used cores doesn't matter. Even with a highend Core i-7 (Sandy Bridge, 4 cores, 8 threads) i had interruptions in the sound. For audio to work flawlessly, disable the IO-APIC, set the cores to 1. With XP-Guests this counts:

Guest: Windows 7 Ultimate Like many others here, on other forums and (I'm sure) in the world beyond, I've had choppy audio problems with Win7 on VBox 3.0 from day one. This was frustrating because sound ran perfectly in this exact same guest VM in VMWare. No amount of tweaking could fix the problem.

Somehow the last few releases of Windows 10 have very bad sound quality on the latest few releases of VirtualBox. I now have VirtualBox 5.2.16 with associated ExtensionPack and GuestAdditions installed, the sound quality is rubbish on Windows 10 Build 17134.xxx and above, but I don't have the sound problem with Windows 7 or XP.

Tested VirtualBox 5.2.32 on Windows 7 host and Windows XP/7 guests. Audio quality is good. There is no distortion/skipping/stutter. However, delay is built up while playing sound. Audio is in sync at start but drifts gradually. There is a 2 second delay after 2 hours of playing. It is noticeable when start, pause or resume playing.

Choppy audio... by jtniehof » 7. May 2008, 01:33. This seems a fairly common issue around here, but figured I'd try. Windows XP guest; Ubuntu 8.04 host; VBox 1.5.6_OSE with the guest extensions installed. 1.83GHz Core2 Duo, 1GB RAM. I've been using the "play" button in the Windows sound control panel just to test audio.

But the output is choppy even in 5.0.4 and worse with Windows 10 confirmed… I don't mean to sound like a broken record (subtle audio reference) but, on my Ubuntu 15.04 host, my Windows 7 guest sounds bad, my Windows 10 (build 10547) guest sounds downright awful.

The audio crackling problem seems to be an artifact of windows 10 using smaller audio buffers than windows 7 - and VB not keeping up. In short, guest windows cannot process the audio IRQ fast enough under virtualbox and an audio buffer underrun occurs. Windows 10 reduced the audio latency (and thus the buffer size) from 10ms -> 1ms.

Choppy/skippy/stuttering audio and ... - Oracle VM …

    https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/4391
Since upgrading to VirtualBox 3.0.0, audio and video playback have become unusable with mplayer. Audio will stutter and skip constantly; video will pause for a moment and then catch up, repeatedly. This does not happen to such a great degree with other audio/video playback programs, but all exhibit the behaviour to a noticeable degree.

r/virtualbox - Audio is choppy and lags in old PC games …

    https://www.reddit.com/r/virtualbox/comments/ihq7t5/audio_is_choppy_and_lags_in_old_pc_games_on_guest/
Audio choppiness is often due to the IOAPIC setting in the OS xml file. Close VirtualBox and open your guest machine's XML configuration file in a text editor. Find the setting <IOAPIC enabled="true"/> change it to false and save the file. To stop Virtualbox changing it back, change the file property to readonly. Now run your VM.
