Using PulseAudio, I get very choppy playback a few times, and then nothing. The sound playback device in the guest Sound control panel is set to SigmaTel audio (the only option.) VirtualBox 5.0 - Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack (Version: 5.0.0 r101573) Guest: Windows 8.1 x64. Host audio driver: PulseAudio. Audio controller: Intel HD Audio. 4 CPU cores - 4 GB RAM - SSD. No matter what settings / combinations I try the audio is always choppy inside the VM. Changing to ALSA makes it even worse.

Sound was running fine on Windows 10 VM, using vanilla install with Pulseaudio sound, but after a windows update the sound became choppy. Another separate win 10 VM was fine, and duplicating settings from one to the other made no difference. I held back on letting the second VM do a windows update, but did eventually and then it got the problem ...

Now, every distro has flickery settings and the audio is choppy and stutters. And I've realized that if in those older (or stable) distributions I connected and HDMI monitor, the problem appears. I can't imagine what would happen if I tried a distribution with the problem and then connected and HDMI monitor.

Both my host and guest are Windows 7 Professional. If I use the HD Audio driver for the guest, the audio lags behind the video a few frames for any streaming video such as news or YouTube. Also, there is distortion, popping, crackling, skipping, etc. of the audio. After switching to AC97 ICH in the guest, the LAGGING problem goes away.

FWIW I had problems with choppy audio running Win 7 as client in VirtualBox on Fedora 14 Host. I resolved this issue by installing the equalizer on the Fedora 14 Host. I went to add/remove programs on host, searched for PulseAudio, found the equalizer program (noarch) and installed and enabled it on the host. This immediately resolved the issue.
