In VirtualBox 2.x, it appears that audio input/recording does not work when you select PulseAudio in the Virtual machine settings. However, if you select 'Alsa', then it works. There might be some issues with audio input quality, but the important issue is it works. What I suggest is to change the report by add 'Pulseaudio' in the title.

I use VBox 4.3.18. I set Intel Audio. The steps to finding the problem: (1) goto your guest os's master volume, set the properties to show all the volume controls for playback. (2) Shall see few items (line-in,..) are muted. (3) "Unmute" and "turn up the volume" them all. (4) Goto Control Panel, test your sound recording. It shall work now.

In the VM settings, audio shows as enabled, but of course there's no separation between input and output. When configured in Pulse/Intel mode, in the pulse volume control tool, it shows the VirtualBox / Windows 10 in the recording devices tab, and shows a moving VU meter (which is almost insulting, really! ) See the attached image.
