    https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?t=43641
Audio is kind of choppy, depending somewhat on the kind of controller i use and depending on the application. Some applications run better, others do not. I looked up the manual if there are any audio buffers Virtualbox uses but to no avail.

Audio distortion/skipping/stutter in Windows ... - VirtualBox

    https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/17225
In VirtualBox-5.2.19-125384-Win sound in/out works fine as well as in VirtualBox-5.2.97-125396-Win. I also tried sound enable/disable (VM menu Devices->Audio->Audio output): it works definitely better than in 5.1.x, but after several enable/disbale cycles the sound would crackle when it is disabled. VirtualBox 5.0 - Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack (Version: 5.0.0 r101573) Guest: Windows 8.1 x64. Host audio driver: PulseAudio. Audio controller: Intel HD Audio. 4 CPU cores - 4 GB RAM - SSD. No matter what settings / combinations I try the audio is always choppy inside the VM. Changing to ALSA makes it even worse.

Choppy/skippy/stuttering audio and video playback - …

    https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/4391
Since upgrading to VirtualBox 3.0.0, audio and video playback have become unusable with mplayer. Audio will stutter and skip constantly; video will pause for a moment and then catch up, repeatedly. This does not happen to such a great degree with other audio/video playback programs, but all exhibit the behaviour to a noticeable degree.

Audio choppiness is often due to the IOAPIC setting in the OS xml file Close VirtualBox and open your guest machine's XML configuration file in a text editor. Find the setting <IOAPIC enabled="true"/> change it to false and save the file. To stop Virtualbox changing it back, change the file property to readonly. Now run your VM. 1 level 2
