I could install the ethernet driver (it was on the cd "Guest Additions"), but I couldn't get the driver for the audio ...

cannot install HD audio driver in XP guest - VirtualBox

    https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/16609
The driver installation of the RealTek Intel HD Audio driver fails in Windows XP guest. This driver installs correctly natively. This means the virtualization for the HD audio device is faulty. Not a logical conclusion I'm afraid. It would be better if you were to take into consideration that Windows XP does not support natively the Intel HDA family of cards.

Go to VM settings -> Audio -> Audio Controller -> change it to "Intel HD Audio". Launch the VM, repeat the scan for hardware changes. Don't do anything, just force it to scan. Shut down the VM. Change back the Audio Controller to "ICH AC97. Relaunch the VM and scan for hardware changes. Now let it install the driver. See if it changes the situation. P.S.

Tested VirtualBox 5.2.32 on Windows 7 host and Windows XP/7 guests. Audio quality is good. There is no distortion/skipping/stutter. However, delay is built up while playing sound. Audio is in sync at start but drifts gradually. There is a 2 second delay after 2 hours of playing. It is noticeable when start, pause or resume playing.

See attached screenshots and logs. The logs don't seem to tell me much that's useful except for that it failed to attach to the driver (line 607). Windows DirectSound is the only host audio driver available to me besides null, and changing the Audio Controller didn't change the situation at all.

Boot your Guest, go to Device Manager, install appropriate ICH97 driver within your Guest. Reboot Guest, if necessary to complete driver installation. Make sure sound is not muted on the Guest. As for USB issues, read this - https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=82639. I'd note a regular Windows XP install would include ICH97 drivers.
