The maximum bitrate for a DVD is about 10,000kbps (audio & video combined). Most people recommend keeping it down to 8,000 for "burned" DVDs, because some players have trouble with high bitrates on burned DVDs. At 6,000kbps you can get 90 minutes of good quality audio and Dolby audio. (A lot of commercial DVDs seem to be recorded around 6000.)

In audio output settings select MP3 with a constant (!) bit rate (CBR). Save the resulting video. Now the audio track will be converted and woven into the video data stream. You must not select a variable bit rate! This would result in a variable bit rate per time so that audio will not be hard synced to the video frames.

Honestech VHS-to-DVD 5 Here are my questions: 1. I understand that there's no reason to go higher than 5000kbps when you're only capturing at 352x480. But what about when you're upconverting to a higher resolution? Should I allow the VBR to exceed 5000kbps--i.e. is there any need for a higher bitrate when upconverting from 352x480?

Jan 25, 2018. #2. The effective resolution of a VHS recording is about 320x240, interlaced, 50 Hz (PAL) or 60 Hz (NTSC), so set your OBS canvas size to this. It makes no sense to record any higher resolution or even upscale. This will only result in even more quality loss.
