It plays 5.1 great! I swapped my cable box from downstairs and still I get no 5.1 sound. It is as if the sound is not being sent to the cable box. The receiver will always show if 5.1 is being received. With cable it is only showing 2.0. It was working just last week. Last Sat they replaced by DVR. This is when the problem started.

The HR54-500 receiver has Dolby Digital set for on, but the TV only recognizes PCM. The SONOS Home Theatre System I am using uses the fiber output from the TV and uses the audio format that is being provided to the TV by the set top box/receiver. When using Uverse, I had the Dolby Digital option.

Uverse Inability to recieve Dolby Digital Audio | AVS Forum

That's pretty much standard behavior on all cable boxes, not just Uverse. You basically only two options: 1. stereo PCM 2. DD 5.1 surround. When you connect HDMI directly to TV, 99% of the TV will only support option #1. So, unless you have a TV that belongs to that 1% which takes DD 5.1 audio, you are out of luck.

The 330 should pass 5.1 info to your receiver if the souce broadcast includes DolbyDigital or DTS encoded material. I would make sure that the 330 is set to output PCM down the optical cable. I would also call your provider and see if they are passing 5.1 encoded material to the box. I will be hereif you have a follow up. Steve G., Technician

Unhappy U-verse I've had AT&T U-verse service since 12/08, and I have an issue with audio dropouts on HD channels. I have the set-top box connected to my A/V receiver via optical digital cable. On HD channels with 5.1 audio, I get sporadic dropouts every five minutes or so. I called AT&T and was told it's a firmware issue to be resolved later.

Any Direct TV Stream (formerly AT&T TV) users not getting 5.1?

I changed to this service from AT&T Uverse some months ago; while I like the interface and PQ just fine, none of the traditional cable (or local) channels come through in 5.1... my Anthem AVM 70 shows the signal as being either Dolby Digital or Dolby Surround (depending upon which setting I choose), but everything is in 2.1 channel stereo.
