Yes. Balanced cables feature two streams that crosscheck each other and cancel out literally all noise attributable to interference, making shielding useless. Unbalanced cables generally benefit from shielding. There is no way you can use balanced cables without expensive gear though, they don't work with standard input/outputs like stereojack or RCA.

Shielded vs Unshielded Cable Explained - Tripp Lite Website

    https://blog.tripplite.com/what-is-the-difference-between-shielded-and-unshielded-network-cables
When installing or updating your network infrastructure, there are a variety of network patch cable types to consider. Among the choices to be made is whether to install shielded twisted pair cables (STP) or unshielded twisted pair cables (UTP). Twisted pair cabling consists of two conductors of a single circuit twisted together to help reduce electromagnetic interference …

Unshielded Cables: This cable is usually referred to as unshielded twisted pair cable (UTP) where individual wire pairs are simply wrapped in a foil, without any additional layer of protection. Unshielded cables are ideal for office environments, which experience less traffic.

Unshielded RCA cable is bad design - ePanorama.net | …

Unshielded cable has lower capacitance and therefore a more open sound but has a higher back ground noise. It seems that if the interference levels are not high then a more open sound would be better than a closed in sound assuming back ground noise is not intrusive? You ask a good question there.

Audiogon Discussion Forum

For ICs I go with shielded cables, especially when using long runs. If the environment is free of EMI and RFI noise and the cables are short, unshielded cable should suffice. In theory shielding colors sound, so pick your poison. I have no idea how you would measure how much EMI and RFI noise and determine whether it’s worth shielding or not.
