Universal Audio LA610 - Sound on Sound

    https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/universal-audio-la610
The handbook states that the LA610 is deliberately voiced to sound brighter than the original, and it certainly does sound very open at both frequency extremes. I didn't have access to a 610 to make a direct comparison, but to my ears the LA610 does sound a little brighter and more forward than I would have expected of the original design.

The LA-610 can work nicely as a pre-amp for Cabinet mics. For example, if you are using a punchier, solid-state pre-amp powering a dynamic mic on one part of the speaker, you could provide an alternate, airier tone with a condenser mic powered by the LA-610.

Customer Reviews of the LA-610 MkII - Universal Audio

Simply amazing. Amazingly simple. This thing is wonderful. Makes a $500-600 mic sound like a gem. Makes a $1,000+ mic sound absolutely golden. Warm, plenty of gain / output between the preamp and compression section. A good 87 clone through this is the beginning to a vocal chain masterpiece. If you want more tube warmth try a 47 clone.

This thing is really nice and well-built. Has tons of gain and warms up your tone. The gain setting is -10, -5, 0, +5 and +10. I use -5 level on all my vocals. The EQ section I leave the LOW at zero and I boost the high to +3 at 7KHz. The compressor is really nice and easy to use. Just 2 knobs, can't get any easier than that.

The LA-610 was able to tame those bow downbeats. It made a great de-screechifier. The LA-610 also has a line input in the rear panel where you can patch it into your mix. Unfortunately, we've been tracking so much that I haven't had a chance to try this out.
