Distressor (with 1176 settings) vs WA76. Hi guys. I currently have a Distressor in my chain as well as a UA LA2A reissue. My typical vocal chain will be the distressor (with 1176 style fast attack settings), followed by the LA2A. I am looking to get a Warm Audio WA76 and don't currently have the budget for the UA 1176LN.

The Distressor can do a very effective job of emulating the control of an FET or OPTO style compressor, and does have character settings you can use if wanted (or you can run it essentially clean). The 1176 does the 1176 thing, which is pure clamping down of the signal in a very excited way that is 100% predictable.

I'd say the distressor is the most flexible and probably the best bang for your buck compressor, but the 1176 is a far better unit and more useful personally. A distressor is mediocre-awesome on anything. you can do vocals,drums,guitars,bass,synths,parallel work and it'll always do the job, but on some things it's better then others.

Don't get me wrong, the distressor is a great box but they are two totally different compressors. If your looking for the fatter sound, go with the 1176. If your looking for the more transparent-thinner sound, go with the distressor. Then again, thats just my 2 cents worth. Hope it helps Marty
