In particular, if a VM's audio setting is Intel HD Audio then sound does not work in an Ubuntu 12.04 guest. On the other hand, sound will only work for a Windows 7 (64-bit) guest when the audio setting is Intel HD Audio. Using Ubuntu 12.04 (x86_64)... EDIT: For anyone still arriving to this looking for answers, the solution for me was to re-installing Ubuntu 12.04 and that solved the problem. Clearly something was wrong with the configuration when upgrading from 10.04 to 12.04.
