11.10 - pulseaudio: Why is there no sound? - Ask Ubuntu

    https://askubuntu.com/questions/97204/pulseaudio-why-is-there-no-sound
But as of 11.10, when I start /usr/bin/pulseaudio, I've got no more sound. Note that I can view flash, movies, mp3s/oggs etc. without problems, but as soon as I start pulseaudio, all the sound is gone. When I pkill pulseaudio, sound is back. Now, till now it has only been annoying, and I simply used alsamixer on the console to control volume.

sound on Ubuntu 11.10 - narkive

I'm struggling with sound on Ubuntu 11.10. All applications seem to work fine except Praat. that's because the others use PulseAudio, which hijacks away the audio from programs that use ALSA. The only solution is that Praat goes PulseAudio as well (after having moved from OSS to ALSA only in 2010). Post by mkiefte2

[ubuntu] Webcam Mic not working properly in Ubuntu …

    https://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1860715.html
I have a Logitech webcam with microphone built-in. The mic worked great in 11.04. However, after I upgraded to 11.10, it behaves very weird when I test with the sound recorder. It either - (i) doesn't record sound any all - or (ii) records but plays back the input very fast (like in a fast forwarding mode). To clarify (ii), I notice that the time lapse in the sound recorder changes …

The usual way to get sound back is to run sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart. If this doesn’t work you can try running sudo alsa force-unload and sudo alsa force-reload. Pulseaudio can sometimes cause conflicts with ALSA. If you are sure you don’t need one or the other, you could try purging pulseaudio with sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio.

Apparently culmus-latex can’t be installed as-is on Ubuntu 11.10 (and probably other new versions of Debian and Ubuntu). The problem have been reported in few places such as Whatsup, but as I don’t frequent the forum lately, I wasn’t aware of it. Skip bellow if you’re just interested in the workaround.
