Hasaw. Optical done properly will outperform coaxial, but doing optical properly is very expensive and rarely available in home audio. Toslink (as opposed to AT&T or Single Mode) is cheap stuff and is way short of what coaxial can achieve. The most obvious sound difference is that Toslink sounds smoother, but less detailed and thinned down.

Re: Q for JA: Toslink vs Coax. My understanding is that TosLink can sound as good as S/PDIF if the TosLink cable itself is of good quality with good termination lenses and the transmitter and receiver of the equipment it is connected to are well designed.

The use is to use coax for short runs, because the toslink can break easily coiled up behind your system rack. Also, coax will degrade the signal slightly over long runs, 25' +) whereas toslink won't degrade over any length. So coax for short runs, use toslink if you have units across the run and running wire thru the walls/attic for long runs.

There is no difference in jitter from just the cable vs optical cable. In the latter, I used a V-link USB to SPDIF converter that had both toslink and coax output. Same clock for both outputs. The resulting J-test signal was identical. In the particular gear I had there is no difference in noise or distortion (not shown in that particular post).

From the name, we know that Sony and Philips are the primary developers of this digital audio format. A SPDIF port can support either a digital coaxial cable or a digital optical cable (TOSLINK). So, the difference between SPDIF and TOSLINK is essentially the difference between a digital coaxial cable and a digital optical cable (TOSLINK).
